The Department of English began its journey with the foundation of the institution in the year 1959. At the beginning, the department offered General in English, three-year duration degree programme. Later, B.A. Honours in English was introduced in the year 1974. The Choice Based Credit System of three-year duration began in the year 2017 and is continuing successfully. From its inception the department experienced the incorporation of students from various socio-economic backgrounds and particularly most of them were/are first learner generation. This scenario is the challenge as well as an opportunity for the department to introduce a second language in the remote and rural part of the country.
Department offers Core Courses in Indian & Western Classical Literature, British Literature, Postcolonial Literature, Partition Literature, Popular Literature, ELT (English Language Teaching), Translation Studies, Indian Literature in Translation, Women &Empowerment, Academic Writing etc.Beyond the restricted curriculum the faculty members regularly conduct Add-on Course/ Certificate course on Communicative English & Soft Skill in order to prepare the students as per the demand of globalmarket. Apart from it department occasionally conduct Student Seminars and Invited Lectures. At present, there are six faculty members in the department. They prefer blended mode of learning and make use of ICT tools to make lessons more attractive and presentable to the students.
To cater students individually this department has a separate staffroom with Laptop, Projector, Laser printer, and a collection of reference books. Following the COVID pandemic, the use of Information and Communication Technologies has become critical to the teaching-learning process where the department has relentlessly made use of the digital platforms and has successfully encouraged the students to build up their technical know-how, which would immensely benefit them in the long run. Nonetheless teacher-student interaction in the classroom and on a one-to-one basis becomes the strong point of the department.
